เรื่องย่อ:

ตำรวจผิวดำมีน้องชายเป็นหัวขโมยและแม่ที่รู้สึกถูกทอดทิ้ง หัวขโมยผิวดำสองคนยังชีพด้วยการปล้นรถคนผิวขาวไปขาย อัยการจังหวัดต้องเรียกคะแนนนิยมจากกลุ่มคนผิวดำ และมีภรรยาคุณนายที่ถูกตามใจจนเคยตัว ผู้กำกับฮอลลีวู้ดผิวดำต้องทนเห็นภรรยาถูกลวนลามโดยตำรวจผิวขาวที่มีพ่อแก่ที่บ้าน และมีคู่หูเป็นตำรวจมือใหม่ที่รังเกียจพฤติกรรมเหยียดผิวของตน พ่อค้าชาวอิหร่านซื้อปืนมาป้องกันตัวจากคนอเมริกันบ้าเลือดที่จ้องทำร้ายคนมุสลิม และเรียกใช้บริการของช่างซ่อมกุญแจผิวดำที่มีลูกสาวตัวเล็กๆ ผู้หวาดกลัวกระสุนปืน โชคชะตาและเหตุบังเอิญนานานับประการ นำพาให้คนต่างผิวพรรณ ต่างเชื้อชาติเหล่านี้ในมหานครลอสแองเจลิสของอเมริกา โคจรมาพบกันภายในช่วงเวลา 2 วันของชีวิต แต่ช่วงเวลาสั้นๆ นั้นก็เกินพอที่จะแสดงให้เห็นว่า อคติเกี่ยวกับสีผิวที่ฝังรากลึกในจิตใต้สำนึกของคนเรานั้น สามารถนำมาซึ่งความขัดแย้ง และความรุนแรงอย่างไรบ้างในชีวิตประจำวัน

Tom Yum Goong

I went to see Tom Yum Goong this past weekend. My impressions can be summarized in one word: sigh.

To elaborate: I’m sure the movie will be an international blockbuster that increases interest in Thai culture in general (which definitely is a good thing, especially considering how hard Thai martial arts star Panom Yeerum (who is now well known in the West as “Tony Jaa”) has worked his whole life to be where he is). I just wish there were a bit more (okay, maybe a lot more) substance to the plot, which is not only incredulous but unfolds in a way that leaves absolutely no room for the viewer’s imagination. And when will Thai directors learn that “slapstick comedy” is so old-fashioned and trite, and at best will qualify their movies as “action-silly” and not “action-comedy”?

ข้าพเจ้าเป็นคนชอบขับรถ วันนี้ก็เพิ่งไปขับรถเล่นในพุทธมณฑลมา ไปนั่งอ่านหนังสือสองเล่มใต้ต้นไม้ (ชื่ออะไรก็ไม่รู้ ข้าพเจ้ารู้จักต้นไม้น้อยมากจนน่าละอาย) จบแล้วก็อดรู้สึกชื่นชมไม่ได้ว่าทางการดูแลรักษาบริเวณได้ดี ให้ความรู้สึกสงบเย็นสมชื่อ

ข้าพเจ้าไม่รู้ว่าสำหรับคนอื่นแล้วคำว่า “ชอบขับรถ” แปลว่าอะไร แต่สำหรับข้าพเจ้า มันเป็นสิ่งทีข้าพเจ้าทำตรงตามตัวอักษรอย่างที่สุด โดยไม่มีข้อแม้หรือเงื่อนไขใดๆ ทั้งสิ้น เช่น:

…ไม่ต้องรอให้ห้างเปิด เพราะข้าพเจ้าไม่ได้ชอบขับรถเฉพาะเวลาไปช็อปปิ้ง
…ไม่ต้องรอรถคนอื่น เพราะข้าพเจ้าไม่ได้ชอบขับรถแข่งกับชาวบ้าน (เป็นคนขับรถอันตรายจนรถคันอื่นต้องหลีกให้อยู่ดี)
…ไม่ต้องรอให้ใครว่าง เพราะข้าพเจ้าไม่ได้ชอบขับรถเฉพาะเวลามีเพื่อนนั่งไปด้วย
…ไม่ต้องรอให้ถนนว่าง เพราะข้าพเจ้าไม่ได้ชอบขับรถเฉพาะเวลารถไม่ติด (ข้าพเจ้าชอบตุนหนังสือและซีดีเพลงไว้หลายเล่มหลายแผ่นในรถ ก็เลยไม่ค่อยเดือดร้อนกับรถติดเท่าไหร่)
…ไม่ต้องมีแม้แต่จุดหมายปลายทางใดๆ เพราะข้าพเจ้าไม่ได้ชอบขับรถเฉพาะเวลามีจุดหมายในใจ (ข้อนี้ต้องนับว่าเป็นโชคดี เพราะตอนเกิดพระเจ้าคงไม่ได้ประทานสมองส่วนที่จำเส้นทางให้ข้าพเจ้ามาด้วย เลยหลงทางอยู่เรื่อย)

ข้าพเจ้าชอบทุกเวลา ทุกโอกาสที่ได้อยู่หลังพวงมาลัย

For all you Google fans out there (and who isn’t?): check out Guess-the-Google, a cool Flash game that asks you to guess what keyword would make Google Image Search return the series of images shown on screen. Although it takes a while to load (it seems the game loads images directly from Google), the game is well worth the wait. It’s much harder than it sounds though, especially since you only have 20 seconds to guess each word.

Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, has posted about a couple of his very interesting “Ten Things That Will Be Free” idea on Larry Lessig’s blog as a warm-up to his keynote address for Wikimania 2005, the first Wikipedia Conference that was over a few days ago. Of these ten things, I think the most exciting idea and one that will be of most far-reaching benefit to global development is the idea that all curriculum – from kindergarten through university – should be free. Wales makes a concrete prediction that “a complete curriculum in English and a number of major languages will exist by 2040, and translation to minor languages will likely follow soon after.”

ค้นพบกลอนเ่่ก่าบทนี้ตอนจัดห้องเมื่อวาน เขียนให้เพื่อนๆ เนื่องในโอกาสวันรับปริญญาตรี 9 ปีมาแล้ว อ่านแล้วก็รู้สึกว่าถ้าให้เขียนใหม่วันนี้ ก็คงเขียนเหมือนเดิม (ยกเว้นท่อนที่บอกว่าอยากให้ช่วยรัฐกำจัดคนชั่ว เพราะปัจจุบันดูเหมือนรัฐจะเป็นแหล่งชุมนุมคนชั่วเสียเอง) เพราะสิ่งที่ข้าพเจ้าเชื่อมั่นว่าเป็นส่วนประกอบของ “พร” ที่แท้จริงนั้นมันก็ยังเหมือนเดิม โดยเฉพาะความคิดว่าคนเราไม่ควรได้อะไรมาฟรีๆ โดยไม่ลงแรง หรือโดยปราศจากความชอบธรรม ข้าพเจ้าไม่อยากอวยพรให้เพื่อนๆ ประสบความสำเร็จ หากความสำเร็จของเขามาจากการเอาเปรียบผู้อื่น เมื่อเร็วๆ นี้อ่านหนังสือ ธรรมะทำไม ของท่าน ว. วชิรเมธี ได้ความรู้ใหม่ว่าจริงๆ แล้วคำว่า “อธิษฐาน” ในศาสนาพุทธนั้น ไม่ได้หมายถึงการ “ขอพร” อย่างที่นิยมใช้ในภาษาไทย แต่หมายถึงการตั้งปณิธาน วางเป้าหมายในอนาคตแล้วจึงลงมือทำ โดยมีธรรมะประจำใจ พอมาอ่านกลอนบทนี้ก็เลยทำให้รู้สึกภูมิใจนิดๆ ว่า ตัวเองได้ช่วย “สร้างพร” ให้เพื่อนๆ ตามหลักศาสนาที่แท้จริงโดยไม่รู้ตัว

Synopsis:

A young woman named Tum was laid off from work during the 1997 Asian financial crisis. She comes home that day to find a mysterious instant-noodle box full of money on her doorstep. Before she decides what to do with it, two scary men turn up to demand the money, and before long, Tum finds herself caught in the middle of a thrilling and heavily misunderstood brawl between gangsters who rig boxing matches, corrupt businessmen, and bumbling cops. In the best black comedy tradition, it doesn’t take long for the bodies to pile up and the situation to spin out of control.

My impressions:

Originally released in Thailand as “Ruang Talok 69″ (Thai for “Funny Story Six-Nine”), 6ixtynin9 is one of the first black comedies ever made in Thailand, and today remains one of the finest and, in my opinion, vastly underrated. Similar to the hapless protagonists in Coen Brothers’ movies, Tum is forced to deal with one predicament after another, each one more absurd than the last. After accidentally killing the first two thugs, Tum hatches a plan to escape with the loot, and runs into more mishaps that turn her into a near-serial killer by the end of the movie. There is a lot of blood and violence, but the scenes are so tastefully shot that I can’t imagine anyone will feel offended. Also, none of the violence in this movie is gratuitous: situations become violent as a confluence of bad luck and desperate actions, not as a result of Tum turning into a cold-blooded killer.

This is a cool signature of a guy – I think he’s EVP of retail banking or somesuch – who signed a letter I got in the mail a couple of days ago from a local bank. What makes this signature cool is its pictorial nature: the first character is how the number “1″ is represented in Thai (yes, we have our own way of writing numbers, how cool is that? ), and the second character is in fact a picture of a Bodhi tree leaf. Since the guy’s first name contains the word “Ek” (which means “one” in Thai) and his last name starts with “Bodhi,” this signature nicely captures the essence of his name.

I wonder what signature-reading fortune tellers can divine from this guy’s signature… maybe all they can say is that he’s got a great penmanship It’s definitely the first pictorial signature I’ve ever come across (I mean for a written language that comprises of alphabets, like English).

I think this van Gogh quote comes closest to capturing the reason why I love stargazing so much: every time I spend the night gazing at the night sky, I feel a rush of wonder and excitement that gradually subsides into a kind of perfect tranquility as the night wears on. To me this approaches what the late Venerable Buddhadasa Bhikku, prominent Buddhist monk scholar who was heavily influenced by Zen Buddhism, called “temporary Nirvana”: a state in which your mind experiences perfect tranquility and coolness, obsessing over nothing, fully savoring the moment.

เงินเป็นเจ้าเศร้าเป็นซวยสวยเป็นดี

1. โกงคือเก่ง: เดี๋ยวนี้คติ “ทำดีได้ดี” ล้าสมัยแล้ว ต้องนี่ – “จับให้ได้ ไล่ให้ทัน ไม่งั้นกูไม่ผิด”
2. เบ่งคือกล้า: “รู้หรือเปล่า กูลูกใคร/หลานใคร/รู้จักใคร” กลายเป็นประโยคศักดิ์สิืทธิ์ที่ทำให้คนไม่ต้องรับผิด แถมยังทำให้ตัวเองรู้สึกมีอำนาจ เพื่อนฝูงชื่นชมว่าเป็นผู้กล้่าเสียอีก
3. ช้าคือโง่: สมัยนี้เวลาเป็นเงินเป็นทอง ใครที่ทำอะไรเชื่องช้ามักจะถูกมองว่าเป็นคนโง่ แม้ว่าเขาอาจเป็นคนฉลาดหลักแหลมที่ต้องการใช้เวลาไตร่ตรอง พิจารณาทุกด้านทุกมุมอย่างรอบคอบต่างหาก

10. เงินเป็นเจ้า: อันนี้คงไม่ต้องอธิบายอะไีร ความหมายชัดเจนในตัวอยู่แล้ว
11. เศร้าเป็นซวย: ดูเหมือนความเศร้าจะกลายเป็นความซวยชนิดหนึ่ง เพราะสมัยนี้เป็น “ยุคทางลัด” หลายๆ คนที่รู้สึกไม่มีความสุข ก็หาทางไปสะเดาะเคราะห์หรือฟาดเคราะห์ แทนที่จะวิเคราะห์ว่าความเศร้านั้นเิกิดจากอะไรแล้วหาทางแก้ที่ต้นเหตุ เช่น อาจเกิดจากความโลภไม่รู้จักพอก็ได้
